Egypt is a country located in North Africa, covering an area of around 1,010,000 sq km2, home to one of the largest populations in the Middle East and Africa region. The population is estimated at 86.2 million in 2011, and the majority live near the banks of the river Nile, where the only arable land is to be found. The rest of the country, which makes up around 90-95% of the country, are mainly desert areas, and is largely uninhabited. Therefore population density is high, especially in the main towns like Greater Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said and Suez.
The country’s healthcare system is mostly centrally controlled, with the State holding executive responsibility for the provision of healthcare, with a predetermined level of free care universally available. Over time however, the government has introduced an increasing amount of service fees and incentive-based schemes to the public health system.
The Egyptian economy is one of the largest in the Middle East, behind only Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE and Israel. Petroleum, textiles and cotton are among the main exports of this country, which is still largely underdeveloped and distribution of wealth is largely uneven. An emerging economy, real GDP growth is estimated at 1.2% in 2011, which will bring total output to US$232.4 billion for the year.
